Raikkonen to keep rallying with own team in 2011
Racing series WRC F1
Date 2011-01-12

By Motorsport.com/GMM

Kimi Raikkonen has ended speculation about his motor racing career by signing up for another season of the world rally championship (WRC).

After talks about a possible return to F1 broke down, and then the death of his father Matti two days before Christmas, rumours had suggested F1's 2007 world champion might hang up his helmet.

Having made his debut with Citroen's junior team in 2010, the 31-year-old Finn has now formed his own team called ICE 1 Racing to run a Citroen DS3 WRC.

L'Equipe in France said the team is funded by Raikkonen's own sponsors.

The WRC confirmed that his entry for the opening Swedish rally was received "shortly" before this week's deadline.

L'Equipe said Raikkonen's has committed to 10 of the 13 rallies in 2011.

"With Kimi's limited experience, it may be better to do additional testing while the others are competing," his manager Steve Robertson told Finland's Turun Sanomat.

The 2011 season begins in mid February.

Raikkonen told the official WRC website that he considered returning to F1 this year.

"Of course I thought about it, because you think about everything," he said. "But I never really thought seriously about it, because actually I didn't miss Formula One at all this season."

F1 world champion will continue to rally people familiar Citroen holds.

Kimi Raikkonen came forward on the last possible date in Sweden starts, the season opening rally.

- I understand that Kimi has got things Citroen agreed with and he will continue his career next season there. Kimi vuokraaaa from the full package, "says MTV3 rally expert Tomi Tuominen.

World Rally Championship season starts in late February in Sweden.

- Interesting to see how Kim's second year going. Training Year is now behind him and will certainly see a better investment, considering Tuominen
Kimi car is a Citroen WRC DS3.

- What is important is how Kimi can get in the car a significant mechanistic. These cars have to drive so to speak, more than the last generation of WRC cars, Tuominen said.

Manager confirms to MTV3: Kimi's career will continue

Räikkönen got some sad news during Christmas when his Matti-dad suddenly died after having an illness-attack. According to rumours Kimi put all negotiations in ice and even started to consider stopping his career.

- There has been a lot of talk about it and of course he is sad over his father passing away which is normal. Yet talks about him keeping a break are pure speculation, Robertson told.

Robertson told that he is still negotiating with several quarters. According to some rumours the deal with Citroen might be announced soon.

- I'm pretty sure that Kimi is still in motorsporting, Robertson assured.

The manager didn't want to comment if Räikkönen could possibly drive in some other serie than WRC.

- Kimi is a WDC in F1 so of course Kimi has had other options too. However at this moment we don't have anything to announce, Robertson emphasised.

There might be some news concerning Räikkönen's future to be expected soon.

- We are now in January so I don't think it takes much longer anymore, Robertson promised.

Ogier expects Raikkonen to prove his ability in rally

Turun Sanomat 4.1 2011 22:36:25

A confirmation of Kimi Räikkönen continuing in WRC in 2011 can be expected in mid-january. This year the Finnish driver does not start his season in Tunturi-ralli nor does he start it in Monte Carlo either, he will start directly from the opening rally in Sweden, 10-13. February.

The contract has not yet been made. Räikkönen's family has been hit by a hard sorrow after Matti Räikkönen passed away in a sudden illness attack just before Christmas. Last year Raikkonen drove in Citroen team mostly as Sebastien Ogier's team mate.

Ogier sees Räikkönen continuing his rally career as a very logical solution.

- If Kimi wants to prove his abilities in rally also, then he must continue in WRC. One can't draw any conclusions based on only one year in rallying, Ogier pointed out.

Ogier was very supportive of Räikkönen's difficulties during his debut season.

- It would be difficult for any top driver to jump right into the WRC-serie without any rallying experience. The competitive level of the serie is very hard. Of course Kimi made a bunch of mistakes but I remember myself making big mistakes during my first season - although I however was born as a rally driver.

- It will be good for Kimi to continue in the WRC-serie so that he is able to gather more better results as his experience grows, Ogier says.

The French driver himself puts down the expectations his supporters have of him fighting for the championship during this year.

- My long-term goal is to win the championship. There is no rush yet. This year I would like to develop into an even better rally driver and of course collect better results. Loeb is the toughest possible teammate whom everyone wants to win - just like I do too, Ogier said.

Last year Dani Sordo was ranked before Raikkonen and he has now switched from Citroen to Prodrive and will drive a Mini together with Kris Meeke.

Petter Solberg who drove an even stronger season than Sordo, his rallying career is ending. The Norwegian's situation describes in a harsh way today's situation in rally series when there no longer is a car to be found for a world champion.

After death of father: Raikkonen is considering career end

Former Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen apparently is considering after the sudden death of his father Matti his career end. "Right now everything is on hold," said Kaj Lindström Raikkönens Co-Pilot of the Finnish newspaper 'Iltalehti' on the plans Raikkönens with a death case.

Raikkonen was changed before the last season of the Champions League for the World Rally Championship. His father died two days before Christmas at the age of 56. Matti Raikkonen Kimi's career had supported early and was a constant companion of his son.

On the future Raikkönens there had been earlier speculation. Although he had stressed recently, love to stay in the World Rally Championship. For which team he could drive in 2011, but is not clear. His sponsor (Red Bull) are hesitant to extend the contract with the 31-year-olds.

Raikkonen announcement expected soon

24th December 2010
By Giles Wade

Kimi Raikkonen is reckoned to have agreed a deal to drive for the Citroen Junior Team again next season.

Sources close to the French team are certain the Finn will return for a second season, contesting all 13 rallies instead of the 12 he competed in his rookie year. Raikkonen’s management and his primary backer Red Bull have remained tight-lipped about next season.

“Kimi’s deal is done,” said the source. “He’ll be staying with Citroen for another year, but the team name is probably going to change.”

Citroen Racing director Olivier Quesnel admitted the Citroen Junior Team moniker would probably be replaced for next year, given that, since Sebastien Ogier’s elevation to the Citroen Total World Rally Team, there are no young drivers coming through the CJT.

In recent months, Raikkonen has been increasingly keen to remain in the world championship, eschewing a return to Formula 1 despite being strongly linked to a Renault seat.

Sources state an announcement of Raikkonen’s deal to drive a DS3 WRC in 2011 will be made in the New Year.

Raikkonen finished 10th in the World Rally Championship in his debut season, with his best result was fifth on the Rally of Turkey in April.

Raikkonen close to Citroen WRC deal

By David Evans and Jonathan Noble Thursday, December 23rd 2010, 15:02 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen is on the verge of committing his future to Citroen in the World Rally Championship, AUTOSPORT has learned, with an announcement expected within the next few weeks.

The former Formula 1 world champion has been the subject of intense speculation over recent months - with the Finn having been linked with a return to grand prix racing or a switch to Ford in the WRC at various points over the year.

However, his interest in Renault cooled when he got annoyed that details of his contact were leaked to the press as the Enstone-based team held back on deciding what to do with Vitaly Petrov.

Most recently, Raikkonen's talks with Ford were understood to have reached an advanced stage about him joining up with Ken Block in the Monster-sponsored team.

But, despite looking at options elsewhere, Raikkonen's stance over recent weeks was always to remain a WRC driver and Citroen Sport director Olivier Quesnel said the French firm wants to keep him.

High level sources have revealed to AUTOSPORT that Raikkonen recently agreed to remain at his current Citroen Junior outfit for 2011 so he can build on the experience he gained this year.

His management team was unavailable for comment about the state of negotiations with Citroen, while Red Bull would only confirm that it remains in negotiations with the former Ferrrari driver about 2011.

However, a source close to the Citroen team told AUTOSPORT: "We expect Kimi to be here again next year. He has talked to a few people about a few things, but this is where he's going to be. The agreement, we're told, is made."

During his debut season in the WRC, Raikkonen's best result was fifth place on the Rally of Turkey - while he won his first ever stage on the Rallye Deutschland.

Once his deal is officially signed and confirmed by the team, Raikkonen is expected to get his first taste of his 2011 DS3 WRC in the first few weeks of January.

Rally career of Räikkönen to continue in Ford

According to Ilta-Sanomat, Kimi Räikkönen will transition to Ford next season. Raikkonen is not getting any more money from his sponsor, the energy drink giant Red Bull, which intends to invest more in the F1 business. It indeed is rumoured that the Finn is moving to the Monster World Rally Team which is a customer of Ford.

Raikkonen is getting funding from the United States to continue his rally career. The probable alternative for his sponsor is the competitor of Red Bull, which is Monster.

Citroen has commented that the negotiations have not progressed with Räikkönen. The team's factory cars will be driven next season by world champion Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier. In addition to Räikkönen, there is also the Norwegian Petter Solberg, among others who are options for the junior team.

Raikkonen not closing door on F1

"I hope we will know what direction we are going by the end of November"

Friday 26 November 2010 - 08h04, by GMM
Kimi Raikkonen’s plans for 2011 are still not secure, but the Finn appears unlikely to be returning to formula one any time soon.

The 2007 world champion looks set to either stay with Red Bull-sponsored Citroen next year or switch to another world rally championship team, despite earlier speculation suggesting he might go back to F1.

"Of course you always want to decide your next plans sooner rather than later, but sometimes it’s just not possible," Raikkonen’s manager Steve Robertson told Turun Sanomat newspaper.

"I hope we will know what direction we are going by the end of November," he added.

Robertson said the 31-year-old driver is likely to stay in rallying for now.

"We have not talked with anyone in F1," he insisted. "Kimi hasn’t closed the door on it; you never say never in case the right offer comes along."

He said Raikkonen, who cleared the way at Ferrari last year for the arrival of sponsor Santander and Fernando Alonso, would have done well this year at the wheel of the F10.

"I think he would have done pretty much the same as Fernando did," said Robertson. "Fernando drove a great season and I don’t want to take anything away from him.

"I don’t want to be misunderstood, but I think Kimi would have done a good job in that car," he insisted.
