Kimi Rally Finland review
ONE DITCH TOO MUCH

image

We finished the rally. We got the kilometers we had set for our target but didn't take the points. It bugs because there were a few small misses and we couldn't stay in the bunch of ten until up to Saturday morning.

I have to say that Jyskälä is a great rally. I can't but congratulate the Finnish rally fans.

This is a rally country and the whole gang was fully with us alongside the roads starting from six in the morning. It gives you a great feeling to drive with a support like that.

I have never got so much support anywhere else and I'm sure all the other Finnish drivers think exactly the same way.

The new format worked well. We drove for two days from morning to evening. I thought it was a successful trial. It felt completely different than it has felt in other races.

I have to say that it's cool to run a fast rally like this with a decent machine. These are great cars. We enjoyed every stage "100" when there's twisting and power to push, the chassis works and the brakes are top class.

It was difficult in the beginning. We didn't really get into the rhythm. We tried different settings before we got the setup to fall in place and set some good SS-times after that. There was a good twist too when we got to race against Kankkunen's Juha for the 7th position. The age isn't weighing him down, that's for sure. He went that fast.

Of course you are never completely satisfied with any stage but there was a few after which we could smile for a reason.

Then Kolonkulma on Saturday morning just went wrong. The car slided on the morning stage to a ditch in a corner turning to the right. We didn't go terribly fast but it was a deep ditch and the car got stuck. We tried to get it up by using the gas but only managed to break the front. Luckily there was enough gang so that we got help to get back on the road.

After that we had to do some tyre work because we only had one spare tyre. One tyre was completely wasted but the other one could be put back on the rim.

We jumped on it for a while and got to continue our journey.

Congratulations to the fan who is somewhere dragging the Citroen bumper as a souvenir.

It went well since we could continue. After the service we got all the pieces back. The rest went well. We got important kilometers of the rally pace both for the car and the dude.

It was great that we got a Finnish winner in Finland's WRC-rally. It means a lot to the rally peo...

In Kimi's ride - Kaj Lindström; Home race went well and not so well

image

Hello to everyone again. Finland's WRC-rally is behind us and the weekend went very nicely with the exception of Myhinpää 1 ja Kolonkulma special stages. Generally speaking the race went according to expectations. Considering Kimi's experience, he drove pretty good SS-times. I believe that our speed was improved by the previous Bulgary Rally's good speedlevel. In that race Kimi had to listen to the notes for the first time in top speed and it helped him also in Jyväskylä's fast roads. In Jyväskylä Kimi's listening to notes was very good and focused.

But, but. Mistakes happen, that was known already before the season started. As first-timers we drove Myhinpää too carefully and Kimi wasn't happy with his performance. On Saturday's first special stage Kolonkulma we drove into the ditch. It was a pure error of assessment. Kimi lifted his foot from the brake a little too early. There was about 10 km/h too much speed and we ended up in the ditch.

There was bad luck when driving out of the road. The car's left-side tires bounced to the ditch after hitting away from the rims. The car didn't break in the accident at all but when we drove back to the road we had to take more speed and there the front bumper got broken.

We continued to the finish of the special stage with two undamaged tires. We had only one spare tire with us, so it took some time after the stage to get the other tire back on its rim. That asked for a bit of excersice to say the least. But we succeeded, although we got a couple of minutes of time-penalty in the end.

Citroën is a strict car for changes. When the front bumper was missing at the same time the car's driving characteristics weakened substantially. Next two stages was driven to say "greetings" since the car wasn't working.

It was all the time a great feeling to drive in Jyväskylä. Along the routes and in service we got plenty of encouragement and a big thank you for that. We met numerous representatives of our partners in service as well.

I'm looking forward for the next German Rally with confidence and I'm waiting for it eagerly. The race is driven in three weeks in the area of Mosel on tarmac roads. It was good fortune that we were able to continue from the Kolonkulma special stage because from the rest of the rally we got very important noting- and driving experience for the end of the season. Now that we have experienced Jyskälä, I'm expecting a lot from the German R...
