The boss is praising Kimi's heroic deed: A real spirit-lifter!

Kimi Räikkönen put strongly his name in rally's history books on Sunday.

He set the fastest time on the last stage Circus Maximus.

- We are all pleased over Kimi's fastest stage time. It was a real spirit-lifter! Benoit Nogier said in Citroen's newsletter.

Räikkönen was pleased himself too.

- In general this was once again one more really positive experience. And winning the super stage was of course great too, Kimi commented.

Lindström believes that the duo is going into the right direction.

- We are on the right way here. We improve rally by rally but the hill we are climbing up is still very steep, he reminded.

He was especially happy over the notes that worked.

- The notes were really good. When thinking that we were here for the first time we can be really pleased. And winning a super stage is something that is worth celebrating!

Loeb remains unbeaten in Germany

By Matt Beer Sunday

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sebastien Loeb stretched his astounding unbeaten run in Rally Germany by winning the event for an eighth time with another dominant performance.

Citroen driver Loeb was never headed this weekend, pulling out an ever-increasing lead over his team-mate Dani Sordo before eventually triumphing by 51 seconds. Loeb's fifth win of 2010 extends his championship lead to 58 points with four rallies to go, meaning he could clinch his seventh consecutive title in Japan next month.

Sordo was satisfied with second place on his return to the factory team, particularly as he was in his first rally with new co-driver Diego Vallejo. He had kept Loeb within sight until the Frenchman's blistering performance on the Saturday morning run through the 48-kilometre Panzerplatte stage built a secure lead.

"A very good victory for me again - the eighth one in a row," said Loeb. "It's incredible, I really have a good feeling on this rally. I wouldn't like to be beaten here, and this time it's all okay again."

Contesting the event in WRC machinery for the first time, Sebastien Ogier (Citroen Junior) made a quiet start before taking fourth from Mikko Hirvonen and then closing on Jari-Matti Latvala - taking third when the Finn spun on Panzerplatte.

Latvala went on to secure fourth, scant consolation for Ford on a weekend that saw transmission problems on both Saturday and Sunday forcing Hirvonen to retire, Ken Block's Monster Ford suffering a broken alternator on a road section, and returnee Francois Duval crashing his Stobart Ford heavily on Panzerplatte while running fifth.

Petter Solberg would have featured in the podium fight had he not lost several minutes to two damaged tyres on Friday. He took five stage victories as he fought back to fifth place.

The closest battle ended up being between Matthew Wilson and Kimi Raikkonen for sixth. The Stobart Ford driver slipped ahead of the Citroen Junior man when Raikkonen made some small errors on Sunday morning, and then held the position despite the Finn winning the rally-closing superspecial.

S2000 featured a spectacular three-way, weekend-long dice between Patrik Sandell, Martin Prokop and P-G Andersson. After the latter damaged a wheel with a heavy landing this morning, Sandell managed to beat Prokop to the class win by just 4.7s....

Germany Rally: day 2

By Matt Beer Saturday

Sebastien Loeb's untroubled progress towards yet another Rally Deutschland victory continued through leg two, as he stretched his lead to 35.7 seconds.

The world champion did not win any of this afternoon's four stages but his consistent speed still allowed him to ease further away from his double stage winning team-mate Dani Sordo.

Citroen's podium sweep looks more comfortable now, with Junior team driver Sebastien Ogier pulling away from Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala in their battle for third. They will start day three 16.6s apart.

Even worse for Ford, Mikko Hirvonen retired the second factory car from fifth when he lost drive on SS13. Stobart Ford driver Francois Duval inherited the place, only to roll into retirement on the following Panzerplatte stage.

That has allowed Petter Solberg to move up to fifth. The Solberg Citroen driver was thrilled with his car's performance as he took two stage wins - including a dominant performance on Panzerplatte - this afternoon.

The retirements ahead mean Kimi Raikkonen (Citroen Junior) is now sixth and edging away from Stobart's Matthew Wilson, while Hirvonen is still classified eighth under the superally system.

Just outside the top 10, a thrilling S2000 battle sees P-G Andersson, Patrik Sandell and Martin Prokop covered by just 5.6s, while Armindo Araujo and Hans Wiejs Jr continue to lead in the Production and Junior series respectively.

Lindström is pleased with Kimi's self-critisism

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Kimi Räikkönen was very critical at himself after the morning because he didn't find the rhythm at once and the man thought that he was driving badly. In the afternoon at the second attempt Kimi improved right on the first stage 16,1, on the second 13,6 and on the third 18 seconds.

– When there was hay on the tarmac for the first time Kimi didn't immediately know what kind of traction it has. It went better in the afternoon. Self-critisism is a great trait in a man. When you do something and it doesn't go well you shouldn't be satisfied.

– I told Kimi in the morning 'Kimi, just continue the same way and don't start overtrying even though it doesn't feel that the times are starting to drop. It will come in the end, Kaj Lindström said.

– I mean it certainly wasn't any normal tarmac when there was hay on the road. Fortunately it got a little better in the afternoon, Räikkönen said.

Citroen in control after opening leg

By Matt Beer Friday

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sebastien Loeb continues to lead Rally Deutschland ahead of his Citroen team-mate Dani Sordo, with the duo now a minute clear of the Fords.

Having won all three stages this morning, Loeb was only fastest on one of the three afternoon tests. But he still had enough in hand to maintain a 9.5-second advantage over Sordo.

The Fords have been unable to keep pace, with Jari-Matti Latvala now 1m04.7s adrift in third, and Mikko Hirvonen having lost fourth place to Citroen Junior's Sebastien Ogier.

Following his mechanical problems this morning, returnee Francois Duval has charged back up to sixth, ahead of his Stobart Ford team-mate Matthew Wilson, who is fending off Kimi Raikkonen in the second Citroen Junior entry.

Pushing hard to regain time after his morning puncture, Petter Solberg won the first stage of the loop, only to damage another tyre after a slight error on the second run through Moselland, the day's last stage.

Pos Driver Car Time/Gap
1. Sebastien Loeb Citroen 1h18m52.5s
2. Dani Sordo Citroen + 9.5s
3. Jari-Matti Latvala Ford + 1m04.7s

A Concrete challenge
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It's time we are heading for Germany. They say it's a tarmac surface, but most of all, for me, it brings a new challenge to go fast on the concrete roads, too.

Obviously, I know well the Red Bull Citroën Junior Team us to get through the weekend without mistakes and errors. This is the second tarmac rally of the season. We should heve the pace for the good result - as long as we avoid the biggerish mistakes.

In Rally Finland I got the luxury of having done it once before. But the rest of the season I have just all new places to go rallying.

Well, Germany Rally is a brand new race for me, but still it feels nicer to get back to the tarmac rally. Most of the time in Bulgaria was very encouraging for us. But as well we know, it's not helping a single bit this time.

German Rally is so different compared to the stages in Bulgaria. Instead of a whole tarmac rally we have plenty of miles on the roads surfaced with concrete. What I've heard, they are very slippery and we have to handle il with care down there.

Obviously, there is a lot talking of the pace notes in every rally, but this time it's even more important to get them perfecly right. We have to very precise and very careful with making the pace notes for this rally.

The most extreme points is the 48 kilometre special stage. It's the longest stage we'll have with these WRC cars. While you do that twice, it's almost one third of the total of the special stage kilometres in this rally.

I presume, it's going to be pretty hot in the cabin in that stage and, for sure, it will show the importance of the experience much more than in any other place. Obviously, it's the stage you'll win or lose in a big way, too.

After Rally Finland we had a couple of tests in Germany. Everything went well. The car felt good and we found some new settings for this rally.

Germany has never been good place for me, while I raced in Formula One. There was not a single weekend, we got everything nicely together. Always something went wrong.

But I'm not going to take any pressure of the old times. This is a different kind of a challenge and my number one hope is to finish the rally without any major hiccups. If we managed to do it, fine. We need all the miles available to clinch more the rallying experience we need so much in this point of my racing career.

After Jyväskylä I chilled out a little while with trial and golf. Of course, I trained e...

Red Bull Rallye Deutschland - Preview
image

Finland, even Formula One World Champions. So every year 27,000 Finnish boys (women are exempted) join the army. In return for getting up at 5am and enduring cold showers for up to a year, the young conscripts are paid between four and 10 Euros per hour.

Most people are keen never to go back. Yet Kimi will return to military duty once more this weekend, when he takes on some of the most challenging asphalt stages on the World Rally Championship, held in the Baumholder military area on day two of the Rallye Deutschland in Germany.

These long stages are made up of concrete roads that were previously used for testing tanks. By the side of the road are huge stone blocks known as hinkelsteins: these were originally designed for preventing the tanks from going off the road. Needless to say, hitting one of these in a rally car is not recommended.

Luckily, Kimi has a considerably more sophisticated vehicle than a tank at his disposal: the all-conquering Citroen C4 WRC. And the remaining two days of the Rallye Deutschland, on Friday and Sunday, are somewhat more normal than the unique challenge of Baumholder.

The difference between driving on a circuit and on an asphalt rally stage is huge. But Bulgaria last month showed Kimi’s potential on sealed surfaces in a rally car, and he is determined to capitalise on the experience in Germany this weekend.

“I don’t know exactly what the German stages will be like, but I know that they will be very different to Bulgaria,” said the 2007 Formula One World Champion and winner of 18 Grands Prix. “In racing, the surface of one circuit is not massively different to the surface of another, although there are some small changes. In rallying, the difference is huge on every event. There is so much variety on a rally: every kilometre and every corner is different. That’s why experience is so important in this sport. So I just need to keep on building up my knowledge: I will try my best in Germany but I really need to make sure that I am there at the finish so that I can learn all about this event. Everyone tells me that the stages are quite complicated so we will have to be careful, especially if it is raining.”

Co-driver Kaj Lindstrom knows what to expect from the Rallye Deutschland, having competed on the event twice previously alongside four-time World Champion Tommi Makinen: one of the many rally experts who have been impressed by what Kimi has done in his first year of the world championship.

“This is only goi...

Makinen: asphalt podium a possibility for Kimi
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Four-time world champion Tommi Makinen says he wouldn’t bet against compatriot Kimi Raikkonen landing a podium finish before the end of the current world championship campaign.

Raikkonen, in his first season in the global series, will take part on Rallye Deutschland next week in his Red Bull-backed Citroen C4 WRC, the second Tarmac event of the year.

Makinen, who coached the ex-Formula One driver during his transition to rallying, said he expected Raikkonen to excel on the remaining sealed surface events following an impressive showing on the all-asphalt Rally Bulgaria in July.

“He did very good in Bulgaria and I’m sure he will again be good on the other Tarmac events,” said Makinen. “It will be very, very difficult to get a podium but, if everything really goes well, you never know – it’s quite possible.”

Co-driver promises: Kimi can do much better
image

Kaj Lindström, who reads notes for Kimi Räikkönen in WRC, is convinced of the former F1 driver's talent in the rally car.

-We've made progress in every race which is the most important thing for us this year, Lindströn said in a press release of the Citroen junior team.

The next WRC race is driven on Germany's tarmac roads next weekend.

-Our performance in the first asphalt rally in Bulgaria was the most impressive one this season. I know that there's a lot more to come from Kimi, Lindström continued.

Räikkönen himself goes to Germany with a cautious mind and is aiming for a good position.

-This is a new competition for me again. In my first asphalt rally with the Citroen C4 WRC car I immediately found a good feeling. The most important thing for me is to get used to driving a WRC car on this surface. Based on my previous experience I can say that driving on tarmac feels a bit more natural for me but driving a rally car is still a copletely different thing than driving on track, Räikkönen reminds.
