Raikkonen expects Rally GB to be 'very tricky'

image
Kimi Raikkonen: Our season has not gone entirely according to plan, but this is actually what I expected: it's completely normal when you are learning something so new. But I've really enjoyed it.

F1 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen will be hoping for a change of fortune in Wales this week after a miserable run of events in Spain, France and Japan.

Raikkonen didn't even start in Spain a few weeks ago after crashing out in the recce and after also going off in France and Japan, the Finn will be keen to end his first full-year in the World Rally Championship on a relative high.

To date the Citroen Junoior Team man has scored 21 points - his best result, a fifth place in Turkey back in April. However with his future still not confirmed and rumours Red Bull are not too keen on backing the 'ice-man' for a second season in 2011, he will be out to try and demonstrate all that he has learned over the last twelve months.

Indeed while his first year in the WRC has been a bit mixed, Kimi is adamant he is happy he made the decision to turn his back on F1.

"Rallying is like a national sport in Finland: since I was a kid I followed it and I grew up with all these big names who were right at the front. So rallying is something that I always wanted to try,” he explained, “it was not at all a sudden decision.

"At the end of last year the opportunity came up so I was very happy to take it. Our season has not gone entirely according to plan, but this is actually what I expected: it's completely normal when you are learning something so new. But I've really enjoyed it.

“Not so many people get the chance to compete at this level and I want to use all the lessons I have learned this year. I'm sure that Rally Great Britain is going to be a very tricky way to end the season because I hear that the grip is changing all the time and I know that the weather is going to be bad, but you learn more by pushing yourself to the limit. I'm looking forward to it a lot."

Raikkonen's co-driver Kaj Lindstrom meanwhile added that the aim this weekend will be to ensure they get through all three-days and reach the finish in Cardiff.

"A bit like Finland, rallying is really part of the local culture in Britain,” Lindstrom continued. “There's always a really enthusiastic crowd of spectators, and wherever we go we get massive support.

“We will need it, as these are some of the most difficult stages of the year. If it rains the surfac...

Raikkonen: Tough season was expected

image

By David Evans Monday, November 8th 2010, 12:58 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen has admitted he expected his rookie season to be as tough as it has been in the World Rally Championship.

The former Formula 1 world champion has crashed his Citroen C4 WRC regularly this season - ending his last WRC outing with a shakedown roll before the event had even begun.

Raikkonen said: "Our season has not gone entirely according to plan, but this is actually what I expected: it's completely normal when you are learning something so new."

Despite the accident, Raikkonen has been one of the talking points of this year's series and his team manager Benoit Nogier is adamant the best of Raikkonen has not been seen yet.

"He is still learning," said Nogier. "Don't forget this is still his first year and he is still doing the events for the first time. Even next year, if he stays - and we want him to stay, he will still be learning, but it will be a little bit less hard."

Raikkonen says he has no regrets about his shift from the Ferrari Formula 1 team, adding: "Rallying is like a national sport in Finland: since I was a kid I followed it and I grew up with all these big names who were right at the front.

"So rallying is something that I always wanted to try: it was not at all a sudden decision. At the end of last year the opportunity came up so I was very happy to take it. And I've really enjoyed it."

Raikkonen also gave his strongest indication yet that he will remain in the WRC, adding: 'Not so many people get the chance to compete at this level and I want to use all the lessons I have learned this year."

Raikkonen's final outing of the season comes on Rally GB later this week, with the Cardiff-based event providing another first.

"I'm sure that Rally Great Britain is going to be a very tricky way to end the season because I hear that the grip is changing all the time and I know that the weather is going to be bad," said Raikkonen. "But you learn more by pushing yourself to the limit. I'm looking forward to it a lot.

Raikkonen: it’s WRC or nothing

image

Kimi Raikkonen will still be a former Grand Prix driver in 2011, having indicated that he would not be interested in doing a deal to go back to Formula One next year.
Recent speculation linking him to Renault’s F1 outfit was vigorously denied by Raikkonen, and the Finn is now fully committed to rallying.

“I enjoy rallying and I want to carry on, but we have to find a solution,” said the 30-year-old, who claimed the Formula One title in 2007. “Hopefully we can sort out the situation soon. But there are no guarantees.”

His manager Steve Robertson confirmed that the emphasis has shifted away from Formula One for Raikkonen, the winner of 18 Grands Prix. “We’re no longer looking at opportunities in F1,” added Robertson. “Kimi seems to be focussed on rallying at the moment.”

The Finn has so far failed to conclude a deal with his backer Red Bull to keep him in the Citroen Junior Team, although his management is working on a deal to keep him within the Citroen fold with reduced funding. Options from MINI and the Monster World Rally Team are also on the table.

“We’re talking to lots of different people,” confirmed Raikkonen. “There are some good possibilities. It’s not something I’m worried about.”

While Citroen’s Olivier Quesnel has previously stated that Raikkonen is “not fast enough’, Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson is one of the Finn’s big supporters.

“Some people have said they can’t see the value in what Kimi is doing,” said Wilson. “Well, for me, he’s brought great value in the WRC. Having him in the sport has raised the profile, created a stir and a story this season. Okay, he’s still learning, but there’s a heck of a lot more to come from him - and he’s still Kimi Raikkonen.”

Wilson : Block and Raikkonen are great for the WRC
News3rd November 2010

Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson says the World Rally Championship can learn lessons from the way Ken Block’s Monster team promotes itself.

Wilson has been working with the American in his first season at the highest level and he says he’s been impressed with Block’s commitment on and off the stages.

“I definitely think there are lessons to be learned from Ken and the way he and Monster approach everything,” said Wilson. “Look at the promotion, it’s just incredible. In France, there were thousands of people in the service park and the ones we had standing in front of our service area were all shouting for Ken, it was amazing.

“How many hits has he had for his latest Gymkhana video? It’s around 15 million or something like that, that’s incredible. He’s not known as a rally driver, he’s a gymkhana driver – but look at the good it’s doing for the WRC.”

Wilson added that he could see similar value in what Block’s energy drink WRC rival Kimi Raikkonen was doing for the sport.

“Some people have said they can’t see the value in what Kimi is doing,” said Wilson. “Well, for me, he’s brought great value in the WRC. Having him in the sport has raised the profile, created a stir and a story this season. Okay, he’s still learning, but there’s a heck of a lot more to come from him – and he’s still Kimi Raikkonen.”

Jenni Dahlman-Räikkönen & Catherine Hyde: The different lives of F1-wives

The different lives of F1-wives

F1-spouses Jenni Dahlman-Räikkönen and Catherine Hyde live a completely different life. They have only one thing in common: they both love a Finnish man who races in F1.

Kimi Räikkönen's lady is seen on the paddock wearing sunglasses and fashionable clothes while Heikki Kovalainen's wife Catherine Hyde again wonders over fancy clothes.

- I'm sure the mechanics would appreciate it but the drivers don't have time to even glance, the down to earth Hyde critisised the paddock girls style.

Although Catherine Hyde crushes the traditional picture of a F1-wife she isn't a fading wallflower herself. When there's need for it she will walk on the red carpet looking spectacular, like last May in Cannes. Hyde has told that she is rather behind the scenes than in the spotlights.

In the paddock the blonde Brit walks in jeans and spends her time reading. She like to be comfortable and wears warm wool-sweaters and has a ponytail. And she wears little makeup, if all.

image

Dahlman-Räikkönen loves the fashion on the paddock and outside the paddock. The trained beauty messes up men's heads with her tight jeans and high heels. Only a few years ago Jenni favoured skirts on the paddock, nowadays she wears revealing tops showing her muscular arms and tight t-shirts. Flashing jewellery, handbags and dark sunglasses are her style.

image

Dahlman-Räikkönen doesn't buy her clothes from everywhere. The stylish woman likes to shop luxury brands and gets them as a gift from her husband. Hyde again can go to a supermarket for shopping and she dyed her hair during Christmas in Kuusamo, in supermarket Prisma's hair salon.

Hyde who is natural and intelligent has met Dahlman-Räikkönen, who jumped to the F1-world from the model-world, only once and the meeting didn't sparkle a heartly friendship.

- Jenni is very interested in horses, I again am scared of them. It's not the best starting point for a friendship, Hyde says in MeNaiset.

Kimi don't return in F1

Steve Robertson confirmed to MTV3 that he is negotiating a rally-contract for his protegé for the next season too. The comeback to F1 is a closed option at least when it comes to next season.

- We aren't looking for possibilities in F1 anymore. Kimi seems to be more concentrated on rally at this moment, Robertson told.

Has Kimi turned his back on F1 for good?

- Never say never but at the moment the eye is not on F1, Robertson said.

- Nothing has been decided yet. We will tell when we have something to tell. At the moment nothing has been signed. We are negotiating with several different teams but I can't go more into it, Robertson said.

Raikkonen close to staying in rally with Citroen - boss

Racing series F1
Kimi Raikkonen is reportedly close to deciding to stay in the world rally championship with Red Bull and Citroen next year.

After F1's world champion of 2007 quelled speculation he is looking to return to Formula One next year with Renault, Citroen's competition boss has now revealed that talks between Raikkonen and his sponsor Red Bull are well advanced.

"I know the negotiations are progressing well for Kimi to stay in the Citroen junior team," Olivier Quesnel reportedly told Autosprint magazine in Italy.

"I don't know when something will be officially announced," he acknowledged.

It had been rumoured that energy drink Red Bull's enthusiasm for the Citroen junior team project had waned.

More rumours had linked Raikkonen, 31, with a move to Ford, with funding from the Monster energy drink.

Rally de España - Conference
image

Q:Kimi, we believe you won’t be starting the event here in Spain after an accident on the shakedown stage, can you tell us what happened?

KR:I touched the bank a little bit, the car jumped on the roof and [hit] the bank. It bent the roll cage and that’s it.

Q:How far into the stage were you?

KR:It was just before the tarmac starts.

Q:There’s damage to the car and you can’t start…

KR:That’s the rules. Nothing we can do.

Q:What did you think of the stages?

KR: I thought, from what I saw on the video, they are more straight and fast, but when I got here for the recce they were twisty with a lot of corners, that’s all we see. Now I go and do something else this weekend.

Q:What are your plans for the weekend? Will you stay around and support the guys?

KR:I think I’ll go back to Switzerland.

Q:What about the future? Is there any news yet?

KR:Unfortunately, not yet. There are some options and, for sure, I have to chose very quickly and chose the right one for myself. I haven’t done anything yet. I want to find some good way for the future.

Q:Has what happened here put you off rallying?

KR:Not really. Okay it has happened two times, but I knew that before the season. It hurts more that we can’t do the rally. And for the team, but there’s nothing I can do. It doesn’t change anything. I knew it would be difficult. I still enjoy it, I was look forward to this rally, but it will not happen.

Q:Will you have a decision about your future before Rally GB?

KR:I have to do it at some point, there’s always a timeframe for everything. I hope we get sorted by the end of the season, but I can’t promise anything.

KIMI FEELS THE PAIN IN SPAIN
image

Kimi Raikkonen tested everything carefully during shakedown. Including the roll cage.

The Rally de Espana is well-known for being a compact event of the World Rally Championship, based on stages around the Port Aventura theme park in Salou.

But this year, the rally will be particularly short for former Grand Prix Champion and Red Bull driver Kimi Raikkonen. The flying Finn went flying a bit too early in proceedings, and damaged his car in the shakedown to the penultimate round of the World Rally Championship. The impact wasn't a huge one, but it damaged his Citroen C4 WRC's roll cage too badly for him to continue.

This year's Rally de Espana is being run for the first time on both gravel and asphalt surfaces, and the shakedown stage contained a bit of both. Kimi completed one run successfully, but clipped a bank on a left-hand corner halfway through the second run, just after the gravel finished and the asphalt began. The impact tipped his car over, and it rolled. The roll cage just above co-driver Kaj Lindstrom's seat was damaged, which meant that for safety reasons Kimi's car was not able to start the rally.

"It was just one of those stupid things that happens sometimes: I just touched the bank and the car rolled," said the Iceman. "It's the sort of thing that if you're lucky you get away with it, but on this occasion there was something that damaged the roll cage on Kaj's side of the car. We can't restart so that's the end of that. It's a pity as I think it was a rally that might have suited us but now we'll never know. I'm obviously disappointed, but I've been around motorsport for long enough to know that disappointments are part of the game sometimes; it's how you deal with them that matters. Now I'm just looking forward to our next event and I'm going to concentrate on the future. That's always more interesting than the past."

The Rally de Espana has often been described as the closest that the World Rally Championship comes to circuit racing, but Kimi will be watching it on television this year as he is now heading straight home to Switzerland.

Kaj Lindstrom is also resigned to being a spectator, but he is always able to look on the bright side of any situation. "It's a pity, but this doesn't really change anything for us," Kaj said. "I've never had a rally finish this soon before, although I've had some pretty short tests with some other drivers! You have to expect...

Raikkonen bullish despite crash

Kimi Raikkonen says he remains committed to a rallying future despite the crash that put him out of the Catalunya Rally before it started.

The Citroen Junior Team driver crashed his C4 WRC on his second run at this morning's shakedown stage in Salou and the scrutineers deemed there was too much damage to the car's roll cage for him to start.

Raikkonen said: "I touched the bank a little bit, the car jumped on the roof and [hit] the bank. It bent the roll cage and that's it. The rules are that we can't start, there's nothing we can do. I think I'll go back to Switzerland now."

Despite having also crashed at the shakedown for Rally Japan, two events ago, Raikkonen said his passion for rallying remained undiminished.

"Okay it has happened two times," he said. "But I knew that [mistakes were possible] before the season. It hurts more that we can't do the rally. And for the team, but there's nothing I can do. It doesn't change anything. I knew it would be difficult. I still enjoy it, I was looking forward to this rally, but it will not happen."

On the subject of whether he will remain at Citroen for next season, he added: "Unfortunately, there's no decision yet. There are some options and, for sure, I have to choose very quickly and choose the right one for myself.

"I haven't done anything yet. I want to find some good way for the future. I have to do it at some point, there's always a timeframe for everything. I hope we get sorted by the end of the season, but I can't promise anything."
